How to Calculate Intercoder Reliability by Hand
Intercoder reliability is a crucial measure in content analysis, ensuring that different coders interpret and categorize data consistently. Calculating it by hand helps validate your research’s credibility.
- Enter the number of coders (n).
- Enter the number of categories (k).
- Enter the number of agreements.
- Click ‘Calculate’.
The formula for intercoder reliability is Kappa = (p_o – p_e) / (1 – p_e), where:
- p_o is the observed proportion of agreement, and
- p_e is the expected proportion of agreement by chance.

- Use at least two coders to ensure reliability.
- Clearly define your coding scheme to minimize subjectivity.
- Regularly review and discuss coding decisions to maintain consistency.
What if my coders disagree?
Revisit the coding scheme and discuss the disagreement. If necessary, revise the scheme or the coding decision.
